About This Tool
⚠️ Educational Tool Only
AmericanInflationCalculator.com is an educational resource. We do not provide financial, investment, or economic advice. All data is sourced from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Why We Built This
The national inflation conversation often gets reduced to a single number: the overall CPI. But that aggregate masks dramatically different experiences for different households. A renter in Chicago is experiencing a very different inflation reality than a homeowner in rural Texas.
We built this calculator to make inflation tangible — not as a statistic, but as a dollar figure that shows exactly what your spending categories have cost you over time.
Our Data Sources
All CPI data is sourced from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the official government agency responsible for tracking consumer prices. We use annual average CPI values for the following series:
- All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) — Overall
- Food at Home — Groceries
- Shelter — Rent/Housing
- Motor Fuel — Gas/Energy
- Medical Care Services — Healthcare
- Used Cars and Trucks — Used Vehicles
